Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) has chosen Children's Miracle Network as the 2009-2011 National Outreach Project. In partnership, the 2009-2010 Pennsylvania FCCLA Community Outreach Project is Children's Miracle Network. Click on the school names to see how PA FCCLA chapters are supporting Children's Miracle Network. Children's Miracle Network at State Leadership Conference PA FCCLA sponsored a treasure chest activity at the State Leadership Conference and raised $574 for Children's Miracle Network. The PA FCCLA State Officers, State Officer Advisers, and State Staff also contributed $120. DIG IT! To help support this project, national FCCLA has created a campaign called DIG IT!; each chapter can work in their community to grow flowers, each flower representing a miracle. While doing so, the chapters can raise money that will be donated to a local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital . Expect a DIG IT! Kit to arrive at your school in September, which will include all the information and materials needed to get started. FCCLA is awarding prizes as an initiative for all chapters to do their best! So, start planning and be on the look out for the DIG IT! Kit so that you can make miracles happen in your community! Visit the national FCCLA website to find more resources and information about DIG IT! http://www.fcclainc.org/content/dig-it--childrens-miracle-network/ Also check the September/October 2009 "Teen Times" and the national FCCLA website to find resources and a lesson plan for DIG IT!. Chapters involved in fundraising for Children's Miracle Network should follow the check writing instructions on the national website. By following these instructions the money can be recorded for FCCLA and it will come back to a hospital in your area. To whom do I make my DIG IT! check out to?Where do I send my DIG IT! check?
Children's Miracle Network Established in 1983, the Children’s Miracle Network has been helping children by supporting improvements in health care for millions of younger people around the world. Contributions account for countless pediatric programs and services which impact the lives of young people who are battling every kind of illness and disease. It takes care of babies who have to be weighed in grams instead of ounces and teenagers who are missing out on growing up. Children’s Miracle Network’s mission is to come up with funds and create awareness programs along with partners for the hospitals’ foundation and the children they serve each day. It is a non-profit organization that raises money for more than 170 children’s hospitals. Countless numbers of people have also come together in their community for local sick and injured kids. It improves and saves the lives of 17 million kids per year with the help of partners who hold thousands of special events and fundraisers year round. The organization has raised more than $3.4 billion to date. Zachary seemed to be a normal 13 year-old seventh grader. He had always been healthy. When bruises started appearing, it was brushed off as simply the results of being an active boy. It wasn’t until Zack began complaining of other symptoms such as rash, fever, loss of appetite, that Zack’s mother knew he needed to see a doctor. After blood tests were done at the doctor’s office, Zack was immediately sent to Children’s Hospital Boston for more testing. Within 12 hours, Zack and his mother found out that he had acute lymphoblastic leukemia which is the most common leukemia in kids. Similar stories can be found, naming children who suffer everyday from a disease or illness. That is why we chose Children’s Miracle Network as Pennsylvania FCCLA’s statewide community service project. We can help kids like Zack keep comfortable and get well again. a Pancake Breakfast fundraising activity on Cedar Crest High School The Cedar Crest High School FCCLA Chapter presented a $200 check to the Assistant Director of Children's Miracle Network at the Hershey Medical Center on Tuesday, May 4. The money was raised through donations given during a Valentine Dance that the FCCLA chapter sponsored for the Multiple Disability students in Lebanon County; family donations from the children in the Family and Consumer Sciences preschool as part of the preschool children's lesson about money; and members carrying cans to collect coins among their peers. Center for Arts and Technology Brandywine CAT Brandywine contributed $360 to Children's Miracle Network. Central High School FCCLA members are currently collecting pop-top tabs. FCCLA is running a contest, where the homeroom bringing in the most tabs will get a sweet treat (chocolate covered pretzels rods) from the chapter. We have collected a lot of tabs and will be delivering them to the Altoona branch of Geisinger Medical Center to benefit CMN. We are planning to "sell" CMN balloons in April: for a donation of $.50 students can 'buy' balloons which will then be posted along the halls of the high school. Charleroi Area High School FCCLA held a bake sale the day of parent teacher conferences. The chapter also had scheduled a hat day in January but due to school closings, the hat day was postponed and later changed into Hats for Haiti on Fridays because of the urgent needs of the people. Students pay a dollar to have their hats or hoods on all day. They are given a sticker and the names are emailed to all teachers. It has been successful. Greene County Career and Technology Center FCCLA plans to take a trip to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh in March. In addition to a presentation on career opportunities, arrangements are being made for a tour of the Children's Miracle Network program at this health care facility. Jersey Shore Area High School The Jersey Shore Area High School FCCLA chapter raised $151 for Children's Miracle Network. Mohawk Junior Senior High School FCCLA held a Mohawk's Got Talent Show and raised over $2,000 for the Childen's Miracle Network. South Williamsport Junior Senior High School FCCLA members made cancer caps and have plans to tour the Janet Weis Children's Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House, and the NICU in March or April. They also sold air balloons at lunch and had a $$ competition in our last period classes.
